Our journey to sustainability

Our Journey to Sustainability

Our just In time production method forms the DNA of a low carbon emission production

Production

Our unique just In time production means we do not produce speculative products. Nothing is produced until we receive an order, making each item bespoke to your requirements one at a time. We believe that this is the new way forward and one day all retail may adopt this approach. Produce what your customer has bought not what you think they may buy. The latter naturally causes waste and even at the production stage some of the production is destined for landfill.

The added benefit of a one at a time manufacturing method, is a high-quality product which will last far longer in your home. This again results in less waste and less damage to the Planet

What constitutes a sustainable textile?

Broadly speaking, the answer lies in four main factors: raw material extraction, textile production, added chemicals and end-of-life.

Sustainability and Green credentials

Far too often producers and retailers make claims of sustainability and green credentials. When fact checked their claims do not and cannot add up. Their business model does not allow them to be truly green and sustainable.  Changing that business model overnight is not possible. If you have 400+ stores you naturally need stock in these stores to pay the rent and the expenses. Therefore, many of the retailer’s business model is to produce products at the cheapest source in high quantity. This is done with the hope that a large portion of their production is sold but inevitably a percentage will contribute to landfill. Therefore, right at the beginning of their journey part of their production is destined to end up in landfill

 Transport

You may find that our lead times are a little longer than expected, so let us explain why. Only when we receive an order does the production of that product begin. So naturally we need a little extra time to make your product specifically for you. Not only does this mean that the quality of your finished product is far greater than a similar mass produced item, but also a bespoke product is the most sustainable and environmentally friendly method of production. Ensuring we only make to demand helps in our journey to sustainability.

Under the current mass retail production model, a lot of products are coming from China, India, and the far east. Let us assume that these products are green in raw materials and green in production, all this is offset and undermined by the carbon footprint created by the large cargo vessels the goods are transported in. So, with all the best will in the world being green is not possible. This will change once governments introduce a distance tax to all products that travel from a far. It’s at that point that local production will thrive and prosper. Until this happens frankly, we are just paying lip service.

 How We do It Differently

It would be wrong of us to claim that our products are completely sustainable and green as we do not believe that this is 100% achievable at present.

However, our business model strives to be as green as possible. We will only produce to demand. We will never mass produce, each item is created bespoke to your requirements. We believe that this is the way forward and one day all retail may adopt this approach. Produce only what your customer has bought not what you think they are likely to purchase. This ethos helps to produce less waste therefore being kinder to the planet.

Ethical production

All the mills we buy our fabric from are Sedex Approved and have passed a yearly audit making sure their workers are paid a fair wage treated with respect and no child labor is employed.
