Seasonal Curtains: Here’s Why You Should

Because they’re such a sizeable feature, your choice of curtain can make a huge difference to the look and feel of your living spaces. You can easily give the room a whole new aesthetic simply by switching the colour or fabric of your window treatments, which is a really cost-effective way of giving your home a makeover and making it feel new and fresh.

Updating your curtains in line with the seasons is a great idea for various reasons, not just because it gives your home an instant facelift without you having to invest huge amounts of time and money.

The choice of colour and fabric you go for in winter can yield all sorts of benefits. If you opt for a thicker material for this time of year, you can help trap heat in your home, keeping your energy bills to a minimum and creating a lovely cosy feel.

You may find heavier fabrics too much during the summer months, when you want to create a light and airy atmosphere at home, so sheer fabrics in lighter colours might serve you better when it’s sunny outside.

Switching your curtains around every few months also means that you can give a nod to all the very latest interior design trends with the greatest of ease. Pair your new curtains with some throws and cushions and, before you know it, you’ll have a constantly stylish house, one that’s the envy of all your friends and family.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that seasonal curtains can also help you make your home be more hygienic. Experts say that you should take your curtains down every six months and give them a good clean to help get rid of any mould and lurking bugs and bacteria, so going for seasonal updates can help you keep on top of this as well.

If you’re thinking you’d like to switch your drapes for the season, perhaps look for something in a lighter colour during the summer to help keep the heat out. If you’re concerned that too much light will enter a room that you want to keep dark (such as the bedroom), go for a lighter shade on the sun-facing side of the curtain and have something darker on the inside or consider blackout linings.

In terms of fabric choice, cotton works well as this will keep the light and heat out, as well as helping you with noise reduction from the outside world if you live in a built-up area. Sheer curtains would also be a good choice for summer especially on passage windows, as this will allow the light to flow in during the day but afford you privacy once the sun goes down.
